Thorana

A thorana (or pandal) is an enormous wooden structure, three to five storeys tall, built as a tribute during the Vesāk poya festival to illustrate graphically and with light, stories in the life of Lord Buddha. The success of a thorana lies in its structure, story, colour, lighting techniques and paintings and is viewed by thousands of people who will walk many kilometres at night to stand and watch the story being depicted.
