Sri Lankan Pol Sambol

Fresh coconut or pol sambol is a spicy dish, eaten to complement every meal. It particularly goes well with string hoppers and kiri hodi and is usually found together. A traditional pol sambol is bright orange red in colour.


  • 2-3 red onions finely diced
  • 1 tsp crushed black peppercorns
  • 1 tblsp maldive fish flakes
  • 2-3 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 large grated coconut
  • juice of one lime
  • salt to taste


Mix all the ingredients in a mortar and pestle except the lime and salt. Grind together until well mixed. Season mixture with salt and lime to taste.
