Sri Lankan Lunu Miris Sambol

A great favorite among Sri Lankan’s, lunu miris is a hot dry chilli sambol used as an accompaniment to kiri bath (milk rice), pol roti or hoppers, ‘lunu’ means onion and ‘miris’ means chilli in Sinhalese.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup peeled small/pearled red onions, peeled
  • 3-4 dried red chillies
  • 2-3 tblsp red chilli powder (as per taste)
  • 1/4 cup maldive fish flakes
  • juice of a small lime or lemon
  • salt to taste

Method

Grind salt, chili pieces and chili powder in a mortar and pestle. Add maldive fish into the mortar and pestle and chop it till it is small pieces. Add onions into the pestle and grind into a nice paste. When the ingredients are well mixed together and become a fine paste, place it a bowl and add lime juice and salt, mixing it well.
